St. Pius uses pair of PKs to push past Festus soccer 2-1 on KJFF

(Festus) The St. Pius Lancers had to grind it out on the soccer field but found a way to knock off the Festus Tigers 2-1 Wednesday night in the Jefferson County Game of the Week on KJFF.

Both keepers had strong performances in the first half, but after Tyler Schumer collided with a Lancer in the goal box and picked up a yellow card, St. Pius finally found a way to jump in front heading into halftime.

Devan Otec had a strong second half in the midfield and was named our Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game.

But the Tigers were undaunted as the second half began, and one of their top goal scorers in Stephen Darden stepped up.

However, Festus’ physical play would prove to hurt them again, as another penalty inside the box set up another penalty kick that would put St. Pius up for good.

The Lancers found a way to win their 15th straight against their crosstown rival, but head coach Aaron Portell said his team was still a bit worn out from playing 24 hours earlier.

St. Pius improves to 4-1 on the season and is back in action Thursday against Saxony Lutheran.

Festus will next play in the Winfield Tournament.
