St. Pius wins extra-innings thriller vs Crystal City on KJFF

The St. Pius Lancers found a way to win another wild conference game, as they knocked off the Crystal City Hornets 4-3 in extra innings Tuesday on KJFF.

It was actually Crystal City who got off to the strong start, courtesy of leadoff hitter Nate Pruneau.

St. Pius would respond with the tying run in the second inning, and senior Collin Brown came through to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

But the Hornets had an answer ready, as senior star Hunter Bassin added to a spectacular season by coming up with another big swing to tie the game.

The game stayed even at 3 all the way until the 10th inning, when the Lancers loaded the bases with no outs and turned to an unlikely hero to end it.

Austin Almany scored the winning run for St. Pius and had 2 hits, including a double, on his way to being named Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game.

Zander Parson earned the win on the mound with 2-and-a-third innings of relief pitching, striking out three as St. Pius improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Crystal City falls to 6-4 and 1-2 in the JCAA Small-School Division.
