(CRYSTAL CITY) The Scott City Rams and the St. Vincent Indians picked up semifinal wins in the Rolla “Duke” Herbert Boys Basketball Classic tonight on AM 1400 KJFF.
3-seed Scott City prevailed in overtime for the second consecutive night, this time defeating the 2nd-seeded Jefferson Blue Jays 63-58. The Blue Jays started the 4th quarter down 48-42 when the defense turned aggressive leading the Blue Jays on a 6-0 run.
With the score favoring the Rams at 59-58 late in the overtime period, senior point guard Spencer Stratman stepped up to extend the lead.
The Blue Jays had an opportunity in the waning seconds to tie the game with a 3-pointer but Hadyn Wagner couldn’t connect and then Scott City’s Stratman knocked down a pair of free throws to send the Rams into the final.
In the other semifinal, the one-seeded St. Vincent Indians defeated the 4th-seeded Saxony Lutheran Crusaders 50-40. The Indians were up 19-16 at the half when they began pulling away midway through the 3rd.
Indians Head Coach Bruce Valleroy refers back to his halftime talk with his guys as the reason for the victory.
The semifinal victories for St. Vincent and Scott City put the two into the Rolla “Duke” Herbert Classic championship game on Friday at 8:30 at Crystal City High School. Jefferson and Saxony Lutheran will battle for 3rd place at 7. Both games will take place at Crystal City High School.
