Ste. Genevieve Volleyball Seeks Fifth Straight District Title in 2020

(Ste. Genevieve) The Ste. Genevieve volleyball team has been on quite a run in recent years after capturing their fourth straight District Championship last season.

A new head coach now leads the program as Carla Basler takes over after having spent six years as an assistant with her alma matter Valle Catholic before serving one year as an assistant with Ste. Gen last year.

She says she jumped at the opportunity to become a head coach in her hometown.

Becoming a first-year head coach in the middle of a global pandemic is not an easy task, but Basler says they are taking every precaution possible to ensure the team gets a chance to play this season.

The Dragons were able to bring home some District hardware last year despite finishing the regular season below .500 for the first time since 2003 – going 14-15-4 in 2019.

Several key injuries contributed to the dip in regular-season success, but Basler says they now have a versatile group of players who can fill in wherever needed.

A talented group of seniors will lead the Dragons’ volleyball team this year, headlined by the return of players like Maci Reynolds and Marysa Flieg.

Basler tells us about some of the strengths of the team as a whole.

The Ste. Genevieve volleyball team begins the 2020 season on Tuesday, September 1st when they host the Festus Tigers.
