(STEELVILLE, Mo.) – Both Steelville Cardinals cross country teams will compete for the Class 2 state title Saturday after the boys took first place and the girls took second at the Class 2 District 5 meet last weekend. On the boys side, freshman Conner Diaz finished first overall with a time of 18:01.80. Cardinals coach Matt Hammonds said he’s witnessed an impressive first varsity season from Diaz.

Five other boys – Ty Merseal, Larry Shoemake, Justin Reiner, Vance Smelser, and Luke Sutton – all finished among the top ten individuals. Hammonds said he knew his team was capable of these types of performances.

For the girls, Courtney Diaz, Daylan Pryor, Breann Church and Lauren Davis all finished in the top 15. Hammonds said he thinks they will be comfortable during the state meet at Gans Creek in Columbia since they already had a strong finish at that course earlier this season.

The Steelville boys will run in the Class 2 state meet at around 9:35 a.m. Saturday morning and the girls meet is scheduled for 10:50 a.m.
