Steighorst Invite starts with DeSoto vs Eureka, Hillsboro vs Seckman on KJFF

(Hillsboro) One of the great high school basketball traditions in Jefferson County gets underway Monday.

The 66th annual Gene Steighorst Invitational begins with a quarterfinal doubleheader on KJFF, as the DeSoto Dragons take on Eureka and the Seckman Jaguars face the Hillsboro Hawks.

The night starts with DeSoto battling top-seeded Eureka.

The Dragons have struggled out of the gates with a 1-4 record.

But head coach Zeb Hammond says junior forward Dominique Bourn has been a bright spot.

Eureka opens its season by trying to defend their title as tournament champions.

The second half of the doubleheader sees Seckman try to spoil the night for tourney hosts Hillsboro.

Senior guard Kyle Phipps was electric in the Hawks’ season-opening 84-55 win over Pacific on Friday, pouring in a career-high 37 points.

But the Jaguars already have a tournament title under their belt, starting the season 3-0 by winning the Rolla “Duke” Herbert Classic.

Head coach Travis Williams says junior forward Anthony Westervelt was a big part of that.

Hillsboro squares off with Seckman after DeSoto duels Eureka.

Coverage of night one of the Steighorst Invitational starts with pregame coverage Monday evening at 5:15 on AM 1400 KJFF.
