Steighorst Witnesses His Scoring Record Being Tied

(HILLSBORO) As Noah Holland was scoring 50 points last Friday night against Festus and tying a Hillsboro scoring record, the record holder, Mark Steighorst was in attendance. Steighorst set the record in 1971 when he was playing for his father Gene. Steighorst told us after Friday’s game that he wasn’t bothered that Holland tied his longstanding record. The former Hawks coach “lit up” when we asked him if he remembered his record setting night 52 years ago.
We asked Steighorst about the “what ifs” had there been a three point line when he played.
Steighorst says when he was the Hawks head coach, Bill Sucharski made a “run” at the record by scoring 42 points in a 1996 game. According to the Hillsboro record book, before Steighorst made “50” the magic number, the record was held by Robert Smith who poured in 46 points in a 1960 contest.
