The History of Memorial Day

(Centerville) You think you may know all about Memorial Day but do you know the full history of how this special day came about in the United States?

Randy Tolliver is the V.F.W. District 8 representative and the quartermaster of V.F.W. Post 6660 in Reynolds County.

He says the Memorial Day that we know now took a little while before it became a united national holiday.

Tolliver says most Americans got behind that special day fairly quickly.

Tolliver says there is one simple thing we all can do this coming Monday.

Now through Saturday, the Reynolds County V.F.W. will be placing flags on veterans’ graves in Reynolds County cemeteries.

On Saturday, buddy poppies will be distributed in Lesterville, Bunker, Centerville and Ellington for small donations.

Saturday afternoon at 2, a Memorial Day remembrance event will take place at the War Memorial at the courthouse in Centerville.

A small reception will follow at the post headquarters in Centerville.

Then on Monday Memorial Day, more poppies will be distributed in Ellington for donations.
