Top Games of 2021-22 – #10 Steelville vs Central Girls in Christmas Tournament (12/29/21)

(Park Hills) We start our series of features that look back at the top 10 games we broadcast during the 2021-2022 seasons on regional radio as voted on by our sports staff.  We go the T.J. Foulon Fieldhouse and the Bob Sechrest Jr. Central Christmas Tournament for the latest installment of some classic matchups between the Central Rebel and Steelville Cardinal girls basketball teams..

The tournament field was loaded with three state ranked teams. Central carried the two seed and the number two ranking in the state at the Class 4 level. Steelville got the three seed and was ranked 9th in class three. Central knocked of Steelville in double overtime to win the 2017 Christmas tournament, but the Cardinals had gotten the better of the Rebels in their last two meetings with two four point victories, one in the 2018 district championship and another in the 2019 Christmas tournament semis.
This meeting started slowly with defenses starting strong. Central took the first lead…

However, Steelville pushed back with a nine to one run to pull ahead starting the second quarter…

The entire game was played within a 10 point span with Steelville’s largest lead at three and Central’s largest at seven, including late in the third quarter…

Central led from the 4:40 mark of the third quarter to the three minute mark of the 4th.
With perhaps a little foreshadowing, the Cardinals claimed their first fourth quarter lead on a stick back from a missed free throw…

With 10 seconds left senior Madison Holmes put Central in the driver’s seat…

But Steelville had literally the last shot….to win it…

Lauren Davis led Steelville with 15 points and Khloe Dischbein scored 16 for Central, but we went with Regan Martin as our Player of the Game…

That’s Steelville coach Zach Kennedy, who says that Central forced them to change strategy. The Cardinals came in as a three point shooting team…

Kennedy says there is something about these two teams that bring out the best in one another…

That’s how we start our countdown of the best games we covered during the 2021-22 seasons, number 10, a thrilling win for the Steelville girls at the Central Christmas Tournament. Tune in or come back tomorrow to hear which game came in a number nine on our list.
