Update on Improvements at Silver Mines Recreation Area in Madison County

(Silver Mines) Some improvements and repair work has been going on at Silver Mines Recreation Area in Madison County.

This area is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.

Park Ranger Becky Ewing tells us about what they have done.

We asked Ewing if they actually had silver mines in this area in the past.

The Einstein Silver Mining Company began mining in 1877 and mining ceased completely in 1946.

Silver Mines Recreation Area in Madison County is abundant with historic and geologic wonders.

It’s located along the St. Francis River, the only river in Missouri classified as “white water” and is used for kayaking in the spring during high waters.

They offer hiking, picnicking and camping.

From Frederictown, take Highway 72 west to Highway ‘D’, following it to Silver Mines.
