Valle Catholic faces Mid-Buchanan for spot in football state title game

A spot in the Class 1 football state championship game is on the line when the Valle Catholic Warriors face the Mid-Buchanan Dragons in the semifinals Saturday afternoon in Ste. Genevieve.

Both teams enter at 12-1.

The Warriors have won 10 straight and are ranked sixth in the state.

But despite the prestige of 14 state championships, Valle head coach Judd Naeger says Mid-Buchanan will be the toughest test his team has faced all season.

One place the Warriors will look to prepare for the big stage is last week’s quarterfinal win.

Valle Catholic gutted out a 15-14 comeback win over Thayer, and as has been the case all season, Naeger says the defense keyed the win.

Having also won 10 in a row, the Dragons finished the regular season ranked sixth in Class 1.

Mid-Buck head coach Aaron Fritz points to his team’s toughness and attitude.

Mid-Buchanan fell a point shy of the state title game last year in a loss to Lincoln.

Fritz says, despite his team’s lack of pedigree, that bitter taste has fueled his team all season long.

The winner faces either Lincoln or Marceline next Saturday in Columbia.
The time and location of the game has changed. The game will be played at the field at Ste. Genevieve High School starting at 2 this (Saturday) afternoon.
We’ll have pregame coverage starting at 1:35 on J98.
