It’s down to the destination all high school teams dream of before the season: Faurot Field in Columbia for the Show-Me Bowl.
Once again, the Valle Catholic Warriors have reached the MSHSAA Class 1 state championship on the gridiron.
But before they can claim the 15th state title in program history, they have to go through the top-ranked and undefeated Lincoln Cardinals Saturday afternoon.
For the sixth-ranked Warriors, this will be the 7th time in this decade alone that they’ve played for the state championship.
Head coach Judd Naeger says this game is the standard for his program, and you get there with performances like the one his team gave in the semifinal win over Mid-Buchanan.
Naeger says, despite cruising to a 37-14 win over Mid-Buck, his guys had to work for every yard, and they’ll need to round into shape for the opponent they always expected to see in the title fight.
Lincoln Cardinal football didn’t exist 10 years ago.
But in that time, the Cardinals have built themselves into a powerhouse, reaching the state championship game last season.
Head coach Kevin LaFavor says the blowout loss to Hayti left his team motivated to get a second chance.
The Cardinals haven’t lost since thanks to the work of all-state quarterback Jackson Beaman and a loaded senior class.
But to hand Valle its second loss of the season, LaFavor knows his team needs its best effort.
