West County Softball Finishes 2nd in Class Two

(Springfield) The West County Bulldogs fell in the Class 2 State Softball Championship game at the hands of Mt. Vernon by a final score of 6-0. West County senior Reese Smith nearly hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first, however, it was ruled foul by the third base umpire. Gracie Wright retired the first two batters in the bottom half of the inning but the Mountaineers went on a two-out rally to score four runs.

Mt. Vernon got one more in the bottom of the second. Wright retired nine straight batters between the third and sixth innings before the Mountaineers brought another run around in the sixth. The Bulldogs recorded five hits on the day. Coach CJ Wright says the loss hurts right now, but a runner-up finish is something to be proud of at the end of the day.

Smith went 2-for-3 on the day. Jacy Tongay, Morgan Simily and Lacy LaMarr each recorded a hit. West County ends their season at 24-4. It’s the second time the Bulldogs finished second in the state along with 2015.
