Windsor, Hillsboro battle in district softball semis on KJFF

Conference and county rivals will collide for a spot in a title game Thursday on the Jefferson County Game of the Week.

The Hillsboro Hawks meet the Windsor Owls in the Class 4 District 1 softball semifinals on KJFF.

Second-seeded Hillsboro is the number-six-ranked team in the state and is 23-7 after beating Cape Central Monday.

The Hawks earned a conference championship largely thanks to all-state pitcher Elly Eckrich.

The junior leads Hillsboro in runs batted in and has a superb 0.89 earned-run average. Hawks head coach Kevin Lucas says Eckrich is a superstar in every sense of the word.

Number-three-seed Windsor is 17-7 and ranked tenth in Class 4, but they came into the district tournament with back-to-back losses before beating Sikeston Wednesday.

The Owls boast a terrific offense, but head coach Wayne Montgomery says pitcher Riley Fendler and the infield defense have been the biggest reason for their success.

Hillsboro beat Windsor 4-1 last week on their way to winning the JCAA.

The Hawks and Owls meet this time in the Class 4 District 1 semifinals for a spot in the championship game.

Coverage of the Jefferson County Game of the Week starts at 5:45 Thursday evening on AM 1400 KJFF.
