Festus Beats Hillsboro in Overtime, 65-64

(FESTUS)   In a game heard Friday night on AM 1400 KJFF and MyMoInfo.com, the Festus Tigers used two free throws late in overtime by sophomore Hunter Bates to get past the Hillsboro Hawks 65-64. The Hawks had two shots in the lane as time was running out but they couldn’t get the ball to go in and they couldn’t draw a foul. Festus has evened things with Hillsboro who beat them 61-58 on December 28th at the Park Hills Central Bob Sechrest Christmas Tournament. The two teams will face each other again February 3rd at Hillsboro.

The Tigers led at the end of the first quarter 12-10. At halftime Hillsboro was up by two, 29-27. The Tigers had a 44-40 advantage at the end of the third. Regulation ended with a score of 57 apiece. With only 13 seconds left in overtime and Hillsboro clutching to a 64-63 lead, Hunter Bates made a drive to the basket, he missed the shot but he was fouled. He sank two free throws to give the Tigers a one point advantage 65-64.

Hal Neisler of Regional Radio had the call as time expired in overtime.

Tigers coach Jason Therrell says he and his players have complete respect for the Hawks.

For the Tigers, they were led in scoring by senior Ahrmad Branch who had 22 points. Carter Roth had 15 and Logan Cash scored 13 points. Coach Therrell had good things to say about the defense of junior Carter Roth.

Hillsboro head coach Brian Sucharski says the teams were evenly matched.

The leading scorer for the Hawks was junior Luka Pool with 28 points. Sucharski says Pool always seems to find a way to score.

The Tigers are now 11-3 and they play at Herculaneum Tuesday night. The Hawks slip to 10-5 and will be at St. Clair Monday night.
