(FESTUS, Mo.) Week Three of the football season is here and the KJFF Game of the Week features the Herculaneum Blackcats visiting the Jefferson Blue Jays Friday night.

Both teams are coming off of losses last week with Herky falling to Fredericktown 56-28 to drop their record to 0-2 on the young season. Jefferson narrowly lost to East Prarie 46-45 falling to 1-1 on the year. It will represent the first conference game for both teams as they start the I-55 season.

Jefferson dominated on defense in week one, but struggled in week two against East Prarie. Blue Jays head coach Alex Rouggly is focusing on putting together a complete defensive effort against Herculaneum in order to get their record back on the winning side…

Jefferson has beaten Herculaneum their last two games with Herky’s last win coming in 2014. The Blue Jays hold a 3-2 series lead over the course of the last five years.

Jefferson has a lethal offense averaging close to 51 points per game throughout the first two games of the season. A big part of that offensive success comes from junior running back Andrew Graves who has already rushed for 317 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Graves needs just 31 yards rushing to reach 4,000 in his young career and could reach 5,000 by the end of the season at his current pace.

Herculaneum struggled offensively in week one, but saw their offense improve in week two posting 28 points in the loss. Senior James Maloney rushed for 127 yards on 20 carries while sophomore Austin Huson saw 24 carries go for 160 yards. The offensive line was much improved in week two.

This year’s Herculaneum team isn’t the fastest football team, but they are a physical group of players…
