(Park Hills) The Mineral Area College basketball teams wrapped up the regular season Saturday night and celebrated homecoming by sweeping the State Fair Roadrunners in a couple of thrillers on AM 800 KREI. The women won 62-60 and the men won 80-74.

The MAC women led 54-42 with 8:40 left, but State Fair went on an 18-6 run to tie it at 60. MAC’S Kiana Williams scored the winning bucket with only seconds left in the game.

That was our Gilster-Mary Lee play of the game. Holly Forbes led the scoring for MAC with 20 points with 13 rebounds and was our Applebee’s of Farmington player of the game. MAC assistant coach Briley Palmer talks about the win.

The Cardinal women are now 21-7 and have already clinched the #2 seed in the postseason tournament with an 8-2 Region record. They will play Friday night at 8:00 in the tournament semifinals. State Fair falls to 7-17.

The MAC men were also victorious against State Fair with a 80-74 win.  Yahuza Rasas and Patrick Strzala each scored 22 points and each went 5 of 7 from 3 point range, but it was Strzala who made 3-three’s in the final minutes that provided the late game heroics. Just like in the women’s game, the Cardinals led 59-50 with nine minutes to go, but State Fair went on a 17-5 run to take the lead. Strzala saved his best for last…

The MAC men are now 22-8, 3-5 in Region Play. They will host 12-15 State Fair again on Tuesday as the Region 16 tournament begins.
