Seckman’s Johnston talks baseball journey, Applebee’s of Farmington Athlete of the Week

(Imperial) Gavin Johnston has accomplished a lot in his baseball career with the Seckman Jaguars.

But he was particularly special during a 3-game stretch where he earned Applebee’s of Farmington Athlete of the Week.

Johnston had 2 doubles, a triple and 3 runs batted in 3 wins last week to help the Jaguars continue an 11-game winning streak.

Johnston says he’s made some significant changes to his swing.

Johnston has been a successful pitcher throughout his time in Imperial as well, and despite an injury that hampered him as a junior, he hasn’t slowed down.

Johnston went 3-1 with an earned-run average of 2 last season, and his big week at the plate included a complete-game victory over Pattonville where he piled up 12 strikeouts.

Johnston says the journey to get back on the mound has been about getting stronger and smarter.

Johnston is in the middle of a stellar season, posting a .433 batting average at the plate and a minuscule 0.80 ERA on the bump.

But he says it’s hard not to succeed when you’re surrounded by such a great team.

Johnston has helped Seckman to a 12-2 record and a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play.

As Athlete of the Week, he receives a T-shirt, a certificate, and a coupon good for one free entree at Applebee’s in Farmington.
