Sentencing for Susan Abney at Steelville Courthouse Postponed Until Next Month

(Steelville) 44-year-old Susan Abney was supposed to be given her sentence Thursday at the Crawford County courthouse in Steelville after pleading guilty in a plea deal.

She and her husband, 52-year-old Randall Abney, were originally charged with second degree murder and abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death.

Tuesday in court, Susan’s sentencing date on the child abuse charge was moved to Tuesday afternoon, May 17th at 1 o’clock.

Susan’s murder charge was dropped.

The Abneys are accused of killing their 10-year-old adopted daughter in 2020.

The Abney’s home is located between Salem and Boss in Dent County.

When the Abney’s were arrested, police found young Josie Ann Abney in an extreme starving condition and she died from malnutrition the day after the arrests took place.

Josie weighed just 34-pounds when she was finally taken from the home.

Randall Abney’s jury trial is set for July 11th through 15th at the courthouse in Salem.

A protest for Josie had been planned through Facebook for Thursday before word of the postponement.
