St. Pius staves off Jefferson rally in rivalry baseball

(Festus) The St. Pius Lancers survived a comeback scare to secure a big 8-6 conference win over the rival Jefferson Blue Jays Tuesday on KJFF.

After the game was tied at 2 in the first, St. Pius took a comfortable early lead thanks to an explosion in the second inning.

The Lancers totaled 6 runs in the second, all coming with 2 outs.

But Jefferson pitching held St. Pius in check the rest of the way, and the Blue Jay lineup came to life down the stretch.

Jefferson ultimately got the tying runs into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh.

But Lancers senior pitcher Tate Ramey shut the door.

Ramey completed a 10-out save and struck out 3 batters to earn Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game.

Pius head coach Dan Oliver says it was an odd game, but he’ll take the win.

St. Pius improves to 12-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play, clinching at least a share of the JCAA Small-School Division championship.

Jefferson finishes league play at 1-4 and falls to 7-13 overall.
