(Park Hills) The Central Rebels will host the Ste. Genevieve Dragons in the Class Three District One football championship Friday night. Central (7-3) returned from their first round bye to beat the Herculaneum Blackcats 44-14 last week. Rebels coach Kory Schweiss heaped praise on his defense.
Ste. Genevieve (8-3) held off a late comeback bid to defeat Dexter, 29-28, in the semifinals. Coach Jay Pope says the Dragons got out to a great start.
On September 22nd, the Dragons held off the Rebels 21-20 in Ste. Genevieve for their first win over Central in four years. However, the Rebels were missing some key players that week, including all-state quarterback Casen Murphy. But coach Schweiss did not use that as an excuse for the regular season loss.
Murphy is back. This season, he’s completed 103 passes on 133 attempts for 24 touchdowns and zero interceptions. And the Rebels are much healthier as a unit now. Coach Pope is well aware of that.
We’ll broadcast the Class Three District One championship game on J-98 Friday night. The Fliegs Equipment Pregame show begins at 6 o’clock. Kickoff is at 7.
