Ste. Genevieve Football Preview

(Ste. Genevieve) Jay Pope is going into his third season as head coach of the Ste. Genevieve High School football team. The Dragons won seven and eight games, respectively, each of the last two seasons. Ste. Gen will have a lot of experience returning this fall, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

More experience on a varsity field can lead to more confidence. Pope says that experience also points to more familiarity with the system.

Pope says we can expect to hear the same names in the box score week-to-week, whether it’s seniors Wyatt Springkamper, Jack Farlow and Aiden Meyer along with junior Devin Flye. But their success could be determined by how well the seasoned offensive line performs.

Pope has been encouraged with how well the guys in the trenches have improved since he became head coach in 2021.

Then there’s the quarterback. The Dragons will have a new man under center after three-year starter Aiden Boyer graduated in the spring. Sophomore Luke Ferranto has a chance to begin a three-year legacy of his own.

Pope tells us what the slogan for the 2023 Dragon football team is.

Lastly, we asked Pope what he thinks he’s gotten better at as a head coach.

Ste. Genevieve opens their season at Festus on Friday, August 25th. We’ll broadcast that game on AM-1400 KJFF and mymoinfo.com.
