(CUBA, Mo.) – A pair of Class 3 District 3 championship duels between the Central Rebels and Steelville Cardinals highlighted high school basketball on J-98 Thursday night.

In the girls contest, it came down to the final possession with five seconds remaining.

The Cardinals soared past the Rebels, claiming their first district crown in school history 46-42. All-time school scoring leader Hannah Cottrell led the Cardinals with 17 points followed by Faith Blair’s 12 points.

Steelville head coach Seth Collins says there were many emotions after capturing the school’s first district championship.

Central had a 19-game winning streak snapped and ends its season at 25-2.

The second game of the evening on J-98 saw the Central Rebels boys team win their fourth-consecutive district title with a 65-48 victory over Steelville. Brent Wagner was the player of the game, leading the scoring with 18 points, including four 3-pointers in the first half.

Rebels head coach Adam Barton says Wagner set the tone offensively.

Wade Scherffius was named the Class 3 District 3 player of the year. Central improves to 20-9 while Steelville finishes the season at 21-5.

Both the Steelville girls and Central boys will face the Class 3 District 4 champions in the state sectionals Wednesday at Jefferson College in Hillsboro.
