Central Senior Dayshawn Welch Earns Player Of The Year For Second Straight Year

(Park Hills) Central senior Dayshawn Welch caps off an historic career on the gridiron by being named the Regional Radio Football Player of the Year.

It’s the second year in a row Welch holds this honor and he earned it by running for 1,583 yards and 24 touchdowns while averaging nearly 12 yards-per-carry.

Despite being a near shoe-in for the award, Welch said he was nervous while listening to the Dream Team selection show.

Welch is Central’s all-time scoring leader with 71 touchdowns, he has the career rushing yards record with 5,278 and holds the top three spots for single-season rushing yards.

He has a few more records, but Welch will always miss the time he spent with his friends on the field.

The Rebels season ended in the Class 3 quarterfinals at the hands of eventual state champions St. Mary’s. Welch got hurt in the first half of that game but he continued to play through injury.

The senior tells us what kept him going.

Welch also has the school record for single-game scoring including 9 of the top 14 spots and the single-game rushing record of 381 yards while holding 6 of the top 10 spots in that category.

Central finished this season at 10-2.
