(DeSoto, Mo.) A slugfest from a year ago is again the kickoff of a new football season as the Perryville Pirates travel to take on the DeSoto Dragons tonight on the MyMoInfo SportsStream. Despite winning the opener versus the Pirates 6-3, the Dragons still stayed right at .500 throughout 2018, ending up 5-5 after a loss to Festus in the first round of the district playoff. Head coach Chris Johnson says DeSoto needs a stout defense again this year, but that will be up to some new faces.

One returning piece to the offense is starting quarterback Briar Fischer, who was just shy of 2,100 yards passing in his junior season. But like the defense, the Dragons will have a lot of players stepping into larger roles at the skill positions, and Johnson says the steadying presence of his senior QB has been a big plus in this offseason of transition.

The Perryville Pirates enter 2019 in search of their third season at or above .500 over the past five seasons. After finishing with an overall record of 4-7 last year, head coach Blane Boss says a big key to the team’s success will be putting more points on the board this year.

The offensive struggles for the Pirates last season led to a quarterback battle this summer between senior Drew Hotop and juniors Dawson Camden and Evan Daugherty. Coach Boss says he’s made his decision on who will be under center for Perryville to begin the season.
