Ellington’s King Comments on Applebee’s of Farmington Athlete of the Week Selection

(Ellington) The Ellington girls basketball team snapped a three-game skid last week with two of their best outings of the season in big wins over Bunker and Van Buren.

Leading the charge for the Whippets was sophomore guard Kaylee King, who helped get the team back on track and was named our Applebee’s of Farmington Athlete of the Week.

King says she appreciates the recognition but cannot take all the credit.

In the team’s two wins last week, King averaged 40.5 points per game, 4 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2.5 steals.

She put the team on her back in the 65-51 win over Van Buren on Thursday as she finished with a career-high 49 points in the game.

Conference foes like Bunker and Van Buren are sure to bring out the best in King, but she says she was also motivated to play well in the absence of junior Gretchen Hackworth, who has been unable to play since being injured in the first game of the season.

The Whippets seem to have found their footing without Hackworth for the time being as they have improved to 4-3 on the season, but with essentially a full season still ahead, the team will have to continue to scrap until they can get back to full strength.

King is well aware of this and says she wants to see the team maintain the same intensity they had last week.

As Athlete of the Week, King received a T-shirt, a certificate, and a coupon good for one free entree at Applebee’s in Farmington.
