(HILLSBORO) The Hillsboro wrestling program had five girls participate in the Inaugural MSHSAA Girls District Tournament this past weekend, placing 21st out of 38 teams with 21 points.

None of the girls qualified for state, but the ones that came closest to doing so were freshman Mika Barciszewski and junior Amber Cage. Both Mika and Amber reached the consolation semifinals and just barely missed out on battling for 3rd place, which if they had won, would have gotten them a spot in the state championships. Despite not placing, head coach Matt Mitchell has nothing but good things to say about the pair.

In the 121 lb weight division, Mika lost to Summer Smith from Northwest by Fall in the 1st period. Amber lost to the top-seeded wrestler in her 143 lb weight class by Fall in the 3rd period. Altogether for coach Mitchell, it was a great experience for all five first-time wrestlers.

Mika finished with a 14-12 record, Amber with an 18-14 record, Joey Madding at 15-16, Julianna Johnson at 14-16, and Marissa Hudman finished the season at 10-14. All five will be returning next season.
