Hillsboro hoping to break through as cross country powerhouse

(Hillsboro) The Hillsboro Hawks have built a quiet giant in boys’ cross country.

Last year’s second-place finish as a team at the Class 4 District 1 championships is the second straight, both times finishing behind eventual state champion Festus.

But head coach Tom Gordon says silver medals have only stoked the Hawks’ fire more.

Senior Josh Allison is one example of a great Hillsboro runner that hasn’t quite ended up on top.

Last year’s sixth-place finish at state is the second straight top-10 in Class 4 for Allison.

The Regional Radio Dream Team athlete for both cross country and track & field is looking for his fourth straight district medal and possibly an individual championship.

Gordon says Allison has always been capable of greatness.

Seniors Jonah Allison, Gavin Vaughn, Jude Short and Jesse Gore also return.

It sets the stage for what Gordon believes will be a season to remember.

The Hillsboro boys will begin the 2022 cross country season at the Fleet Feet Classic on August 30th, followed by hosting the annual Frank Schultz Invitational 2 days later.
