Jefferson County Council considering a county-wide “bed” tax

(Hillsboro) The Jefferson County Council is discussing the possibility of placing a “bed” tax for those that stay at area hotels. County Executive Dennis Gannon says area municipalities like Festus, Arnold, and Pevely already issue a tourism tax at those hotels in their boundaries.

Gannon says adding a county tax and stacking it with the city taxes may become a bit too much.

The idea was first introduced by County Councilman Scott Seek, who is the former president of the Jefferson County Tourism Commission. If the County Council decides to place a bed tax on area hotels, it would have to be placed on an election ballot and be approved by Jefferson County voters.
