Missouri Observing Earthquake Awareness Month

This month is Earthquake Awareness Month. It’s a time to take note of the high percentage that a major earthquake could occur in the new Madrid Seismic Zone. Missouri’s Earthquake Program Manager Jeff Briggs talks about the purpose of Earthquake Awareness Month.

Briggs talks about the chances an earthquake of a greater magnitude could impact southeast Missouri, southwestern Illinois, western Kentucky, western Tennessee and northeast Arkansas.

Next month, Missouri’s annual Earthquake Summit is set for Thursday, March 21st at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau. A topic to be covered is called Myths of the New Madrid Earthquakes in 1811-12. There’s a talk called A Dam Problem, discussing the impact a major earthquake could pose to the hundreds of dams in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Several more topics will be covered during this free summit.
