(PERRYVILLE, Mo.) – While the start of last year’s softball season didn’t go the way the Perryville Pirates wanted, it ended with great achievement as the team captured its first district title since 2001. The Pirates went 6-13 in the regular season, but got hot at the right time, defeating Sikeston, Cape Notre Dame and Doniphan for the district championship. Pirates coach Dustin Wengert said the team gradually got better toward the end of last season.

But now that they’ve accomplished that feat, Wengert said he doesn’t want his team thinking about defending the title.

Wengert said they only lost two senior starters from last year, so things are shaping up well for this year’s group.

Perryville will open up the softball season against Doniphan – the team they defeated for last year’s district title – on Saturday, Aug. 31.
