(Potosi) The Potosi School District is in mourning as classes were cancelled Friday.

Regional Radio received information Thursday that the district would be closed on Friday because of the sudden death of a teacher in the district.

A letter sent to faculty, students and parents from Superintendent Alex McCaul says 3rd grade teacher Luci Martin passed away early Thursday.

State Representative Mike McGirl of Potosi knew Luci and her family well.

Representative McGirl says his daughter and Luci played sports together when they attended Potosi High School.

Superintendent McCaul’s letter says that Martin was a wonderful teacher who was loved by her students and fellow staff members.

She had a great passion for teaching and seeing her students succeed on a daily basis.

McCaul’s letter goes on to say that Martin’s commitment to students and love for learning has touched countless students over the years while she taught at Potosi Elementary.

The letter also lets students and the rest of the community know the school does have a crisis intervention team trained to help with the needs of students and school staff.

The district will have counselors and administrators available for any student or staff member who may need or want help in dealing with the loss of Luci Martin.
