Schnitzler, Ott return and jump-start Jefferson in win vs Herculaneum

(Herculaneum) The Jefferson Blue Jays got some of their top talent back on the football field, and they didn’t disappoint in a 54-0 win over the Herculaneum Blackcats Friday night on KJFF.

Senior Colby Ott missed last week’s loss to Cuba, but he wasted no time making an impact, using the Blue Jays’ opening drive and his first touch to announce his return.

But the other returning Blue Jay senior had a monster night as well, as Dylan Schnitzler returned to the field and showed off his ability right away on the game’s second touchdown.

As Jefferson got another stop on defense, Schnitzler kept taking advantage of his opportunities.

Leading 21-0, the Blue Jays started to force takeaways, getting one of 3 interceptions on the night against Blackcat quarterback Jackson Dearing.

Ott came up with one of those picks, and he showed off his hands on offense as well.

Heading into the second quarter, yet another stop led to another chance for Schnitzler to dazzle with his legs.

Up 33-0, the Jays took another shot down field and found their top senior receiver again.

Schnitzler found the end zone one more time before halftime, as Jefferson led 47-0 at the break.

He also scored again in the second half, picking up a total of 4 rushing TDs in the first half and piling up 128 yards in total on his way to being named Applebee’s Player of the Game.

Schnitzler said it matters a lot to him to get back on the field and make an instant impact.

Blue Jays head coach Alex Rouggly said he knew early in the week his team was rearing and ready to go.

While Herculaneum falls to 0-3, Jefferson improves to 2-1 and wins its I-55 Conference opener.

The Blue Jays are back at home next week against St. Pius, while the Blackcats travel to face St. Vincent.

You can hear Jefferson face off against the St. Pius Lancers Friday night on AM 1400 KJFF.
