St. Pius gears up for boys’ soccer Final 4

(Festus) The St. Pius Lancers are 2 wins away from bringing home a state championship in boys’ soccer.

St. Pius plays in the Class 1 semifinals Friday in Fenton.

The Lancers are 16-6 this season and have won 7 straight.

Considering they had put up 6 straight shutouts to begin that streak, Lancers head coach Aaron Portell says it’s clear why his team has made the school’s sixth-ever trip to the Final 4.

While St. Pius continues to blank the opposition, seniors Collin Brown and Nathan Stoll provide the offense.

Each players has scored at least 20 goals, and the pair has combined for 20 assists.

But Portell says scoring is a team effort.

While winning the big prize is alluring, Portell says he’s focused on just getting past Fair Grove Friday.

St. Pius will play either Lutheran St. Charles or Maryville Saturday.

Kickoff of the Class 1 semifinals between the Lancers and Fair Grove is at 10 Friday morning.
