St. Pius tops Festus on volleyball court for first win

The St. Pius Lancers earned their first victory of the new volleyball season by knocking off the Festus Tigers in straight sets Thursday night on KJFF.

St. Pius started the night with a 17-8 lead in the first set, but an 11-4 run got the Tigers within a point.

That’s when all-state outside hitter Kennedy Lane stepped up.

The Lancers held on to win the first set 25-23, then raced out to a 9-0 lead in the second set and never looked back.

Junior middle blocker Ava Werner finished things off.

Lane was our Applebee’s of Farmington Player of the Game, and Lancers head coach Shannon Leftridge says she can get even better.

Festus falls to 0-4 on the season, while St. Pius improves to 1-2.

Both teams will participate in the North County Tournament Saturday.
