St. Vincent Outlasts St. Pius Down the Stretch

(Festus) St. Vincent beat St. Pius tonight 28-21 in Festus in a game heard on J98 The Boot. It was a back and forth game early with St. Pius going up 14-0 on their first two drives. Lancer running back Nate Ruble capped off a 6 play 69 yard opening drive to put the Lancers up 7-0

After a St. Vincent failed 4th and 12 from their own 18 yard line, Nate Ruble added another touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0.

St. Vincent bounced back with a 69 yard drive of their own to cut the lead in half.

Indian quarterback John Wibbenmeyer connected with Blake Schnurbusch early in the second quarter to tie the game up at 14.

The second half was all St. Vincent. Their opening drive went 80 yards capped off by a 14 yard pass from Wibbenmeyer to Schnurbusch. John Wibbenmeyer got it done on both sides of the ball intercepting Lancer quarterback Collin Smith in the third quarter. Three plays later, Wibbenmeyer punched it into the end zone on a short 2 yard QB sneak.

St. Pius scored late in the fourth but, it would not be enough, as St. Vincent recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. After the game Indian’s head coach Tim Schumer said the slow start didn’t help but he likes how his guys responded.

Lancer head coach Dan Oliver said he liked the start from his guys but they weren’t able to bounce back from a few miscues.

St. Vincent wins their fourth straight and moves to 4-1 on the season and will take on Grandview for homecoming next week. St. Pius falls to 3-4 on the season and take on Thayer at home.
