Stimulus Payments Kept Many Americans Out Of Poverty

(Washington D.C.) The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data showing that the federal stimulus payments helped keep millions of Americans out of poverty last year.

According to a report released this week, poverty levels rose to 11.4% in 2020, but the first two rounds of stimulus payments ended up keeping roughly 11.7 million Americans out of poverty, for an adjusted Supplemental Poverty Measure of just 9.1%.

A total of 37.2 million people in the U.S. were in poverty in 2020, up 3.3 million from the previous year.
