The Doe Run Company Teaching Kids The Importance Of Mining

(St. Louis) The Doe Run Company is finding new ways to teach southeast Missouri kids about the importance of mining. This new initiative involves sending kits to elementary schools containing two-mineral themed activities and a gift card to purchase the materials needed. Tammy Stankey is the Director of Communications for The Doe Run Company.

One activity is called “Toothpaste with a Twist,” in which children can make and flavor their own toothpaste. The other is “Cookie Mining,” where kids mine cookies for chocolate chips using either a tooth pick or paper clip, then tally the “value” of those chips and subtract the costs they incurred.

These kits were sent to elementary schools in Viburnum, Kingston, Lesterville and Salem. For more information go to doerun.com.
