Joe Portell Named New Potosi High School Baseball Coach

(Potosi) Joe Portell was recently named the new head baseball coach at Potosi High School. He’ll take over for Steve McCoy who had been the coach for the last 9 seasons. Portell was a varsity assistant for the last three seasons. He says the idea of taking over the team was floated by him in the middle of the season.

Potosi went 11-18-1 this past season but finished the year strong with a big win over Valle Catholic in the Class 4 District 2 semifinals and a 2nd place finish in districts. Portell says the team re-focused their minds en route to a 7-2 record down the stretch.

Portell graduated from Potosi in 1994 and was a member of the baseball team under longtime coach Dennis Lawson.

Coaching wasn’t always in the cards for Portell. He started taking it up when his son, Gavin, started playing.

Portell has enlisted the help of Potosi football coach Dylan Wyrick and Ron McCraven to be his assistant coaches.

Portell is also an assistant coach for the high school football team. He teaches physical education at Potosi Elementary.
